As a vendor of total solution
of tool environment for embedded systems, we have been expecting
to provide system level co-design environment in 4 or 5 years. Currently,
co-verification tools are gradually introduced from EDA vendors,
but there is no tool that covers all the system level co-design.
SpecC language is a description language for system level design
and a keyword to solve system level co-design. We see a hope that
SpecC language can open new generation tools that cover system level
co-design.

As complexity of systems continues to grow in embedded systems,
cost and time-to-market goals become hard to achieve. One of the
bottleneck is interoperability of development tools, which is more
serious in software development tools than in EDA tools. We need
standards for interoperability that can be established through consortia
type of activities, or giant company's leading of the industry like
Microsoft in PC industry. SpecC Technology Open Consortium will
standardize the product development methodology from product planning
level. It could lead the interoperability of design tools provided
by us and other companies, which would result in easy integration
of software development tools from product planning to detailed
design.

This research has started almost 10 years ago under the sponsorship
of many companies including SRC, Toshiba, Rockwell, Motorola, Hitachi
and others as specified in my papers and books published. Sponsorship
and collaborations from systems industries helped and will continuously
help a real world solution for the design of specification and implementation
in emerging markets.

We think SpecC is a major technological advance in design languages.
The problem with conventional design languages has been that they
required complicated design systems. SpecC is easy to learn and
is possible to compile because its based on C.
Up to now for the last 20-30 years, there have been two kinds of
computer aided software engineering(CASE). Lower CASE is Green Hill's
field, with compiler, debuggers, and utility programs. Upper CASE
is design tools. There is no good bridge between upper CASE and
lower CASE. SpecC offers the promise of being that bridge.
Our focus had been on the lower CASE, because we thought upper CASE
field did not have sufficient sound intellectual infrastructure
and methodologies. We are very excited about SpecC. Because SpecC
for the first kind offers the possibility of properly engineering
upper CASE developing system.

Abstraction level in SW design has gradually moved higher. In past
20 years, programming language has been changed from assembler to
C-language, then C++ has became popular recently. We have thought
that standardization was most important for disseminating programming
languages, and we have been a member of standardization activities
of C and Embedded C++.
We have seen that the market interest has focused on integrated
environment for SW/HW design in recent years. We have added LSI
design tools and co-simulation tools in our products several years
ago. These tools are good for SW/HW design at certain abstraction
level, but still short for truly integrated SW/HW co-design.
As a system description language, SpecC has the capability of describing
whole systems without distinguishing SW/HW. SpecC also offers the
SW/HW partitioned output. We expect that SW/HW integrated design
environment will be ready by connecting these outputs to our tools.
